Scissor Lifts Explained: Low-Rise, Full-Rise and Flush-Mounted
Scissor lifts are the type most often dismissed early and regretted later. They are quieter about what they do than a two-post, and in buildings that cannot take a post lift they are frequently the only sensible answer.
They also cover a wider range than most people realise, from a low platform for tyre work to a full-rise wheels-free lift that does most of what a two-post does.
How a scissor lift works
A folding linkage, driven hydraulically, raises a platform or a pair of pads from below. Because the mechanism collapses into itself, the lift needs very little height when lowered and nothing at all above the vehicle — which is the whole point.
The trade-off is that the mechanism occupies the space beneath the vehicle's centre, so underbody access is more restricted than on a two-post lift.
Low-rise scissor lifts
Typically raising to somewhere around 1 metre. They are aimed at work you do crouching or seated rather than standing underneath.
Suits: tyres, brakes, wheel work, bodywork, valeting and detailing.
Limits: not a lift for standing underneath, and the platform sits under the vehicle's centre.
Many are portable or semi-portable, which makes them useful as a second lift for a specific job type rather than a bay's main equipment.
Full-rise scissor lifts
Raising to a proper standing working height, generally around 1.8 to 2 metres.
Suits: general servicing where a post lift will not fit; buildings with restricted height; workshops wanting a clear floor when lowered.
Limits: central underbody access remains restricted; higher cost than low-rise.
Wheels-free versions add a secondary lift on the platform, raising the vehicle off its wheels so you can take wheels off — closing much of the gap to a two-post.
Surface-mounted or flush-mounted
Surface-mounted lifts bolt to the floor and sit proud when lowered. Simpler and cheaper to install, and they can be relocated. The platform is a permanent feature of the bay.
Flush-mounted lifts sit in a recess cut into the slab, so when lowered the platform is level with the floor and the bay is completely clear. Excellent where a bay does double duty, and the tidiest solution in a customer-facing workshop. Where a scissor lift is the right answer
- Restricted ceiling height. The most common reason, and often decisive. Our guide to workshop space covers measuring properly.
- A bay used for more than one thing. Flush-mounted, the floor is clear when the lift is down.
- Tyre and brake work at volume. Fast to load, and the right height for the job.

Where it is not
If you have the height and your work is general mechanical repair, a two-post lift gives better underbody access for the money. A scissor is a solution to a constraint, or a specialist tool for a job type — it is not usually the default choice for a workshop that could have either. What to check when specifying
- Capacity, with margin — see choosing lifting capacity.
- Platform length against the longest vehicles you handle. Short platforms struggle with vans.
- Lowered height, which decides whether low sports cars can drive on.
- Maximum rise, and whether it gives you a working height you can stand at.
- Wheels-free capability, if you need wheels off.

Compliance is the same
A scissor lift is lifting equipment like any other.
