How Much Space Do You Need for a Vehicle Lift?
Ceiling height is the constraint that catches most garages out. A bay can look generous on the floor and still be unable to take the lift you had in mind, because the limit is above your head rather than around you.
This guide covers what a vehicle lift actually needs in terms of height, width and working space, how to measure your own bay properly, and which lift types are worth considering when the building will not give you what you want.
Height: the number that decides everything
The figure that matters is clear height to the lowest obstruction — not the ridge of the roof. Roof trusses, lighting, ducting, heaters, roller shutter mechanisms and sprinkler pipes all count, and any one of them can define your limit.
As a general guide:
- Baseplate two-post lifts: from around 2,800mm. The hydraulics and hoses run through a bar across the floor, so nothing sits above the columns.
- Clearfloor two-post lifts: from around 3,500mm, because the crossbar and hose routing sit above the column tops.
- Four-post lifts: broadly similar to clearfloor two-posts, though the vehicle sits higher on the runways, which eats into headroom.
- Scissor lifts: the most forgiving. Many will work under 2,600mm, and low-rise versions need less again.

Working out your usable height
The arithmetic is simple, and doing it before you order avoids an expensive misunderstanding:
- Measure floor to the lowest obstruction over the bay.
- Subtract the height of the tallest vehicle you intend to lift.
- What remains is how far you can actually raise that vehicle.
A worked example. A bay with 3,600mm to the underside of a truss, lifting a van 2,100mm tall, leaves 1,500mm of rise. That is comfortable for most work. Change the vehicle to a high-roof van at 2,600mm and you are down to 1,000mm, which means stooping.
Clearfloor two-post lifts include a shutoff bar on the overhead crossbar that stops the lift if a vehicle contacts it. It is a sensible protection, but it is not a substitute for planning — if it triggers regularly you have the wrong lift for the building.
Floor space and working clearance
A two-post lift is typically 3,000mm to 3,600mm across the columns. That is the equipment, not the bay. You also need room to open vehicle doors fully between the columns, to walk around the vehicle while it is raised, and to get a trolley jack or transmission jack in beside it.
As a practical working minimum for a two-post bay, plan for around 4,500mm wide by 6,000mm deep. Less is possible, but the bay becomes tight to work in, and tight bays cost you time on every job.
Other dimensions worth checking:
- Door height and width. The vehicles have to get in. A tall lift is no use behind a low shutter.
- Approach and manoeuvring space. Can a vehicle line up squarely with the bay, or does it need shunting?
- Column positions against walls. A column too close to a wall limits arm swing and makes servicing awkward.
- Adjacent bays. Two lifts side by side need clearance between raised vehicles, not just between columns.
- Four-post runway length. Runways are typically 4,500mm to 5,500mm and need drive-on and drive-off room at both ends.
When the building will not cooperate
Low buildings are common, particularly in converted or older units. The options, roughly in order of cost:

Relocating a light fitting or a heater is frequently the whole solution, and it is worth establishing that before accepting a compromise on the equipment.
Measuring your bay properly
Before you speak to anyone about equipment, have these to hand:
- Floor to lowest obstruction over the bay, measured at the actual lift position.
- Bay width and depth, and the distance from each proposed column to the nearest wall.
- Door aperture height and width.
- The tallest and heaviest vehicle you expect to work on.
- Position of any drains, joints, ducts or inspection pits in the floor.
