Power and Air: Getting Workshop Services Right Before Installation
Equipment arrives, the floor is right, the bay is measured — and the installation stalls because there is no suitable power at the bay, or the compressor cannot keep up with the lift's air-operated locks.
Services are the quiet half of a workshop fit-out. They are entirely manageable when planned early and disruptive when left to the day of installation. Here is what vehicle lifts and tyre bay equipment need, and how to work out whether your building can supply it.
Single phase or three phase
Most vehicle lifts are available in both, and the choice is usually made by what the building already has.
Single phase (230V) is what most smaller units and converted premises have. Plenty of two-post and scissor lifts run on it perfectly well. It is the practical choice when bringing in three phase would mean a supply upgrade.
Three phase (400V) is the workshop standard where it is available. It gives smoother motor performance, draws lower current for the same output, and is generally preferred for larger compressors, four-post lifts and heavier equipment. If you have it, use it.
Two things to check before ordering:
- Which supply your building actually has at the bay, not merely at the incoming supply. A three-phase incomer does not guarantee three phase is distributed to where the lift will stand.
- Whether the model you want is available in your supply. Motor and control gear differ, and it is not a change made afterwards.
Getting the electrical installation right
The lift installer connects the lift. Getting a suitable supply to the lift position is separate work for a qualified electrician, and it needs to be complete before installation day.
What that usually means:
- A dedicated circuit sized for the lift's stated load, rather than a spur from an existing ring.
- A local isolator within sight of the lift, so it can be safely isolated for maintenance and examination.
- Appropriate protective devices and correctly rated cabling for the run length.
- Certification. Your electrician should issue the appropriate certificate for the work. Keep it with the lift's records alongside the installation certificate and thorough examination report.
- Sensible cable routing that will not be damaged by traffic or trapped by the lift itself.
The lift's documentation states the supply requirement, load and recommended protection. Give your electrician that document rather than a description of the machine.
Compressed air
Air is easy to underestimate because most workshops already have some. The question is whether you have enough, delivered where you need it.
Some lifts, particularly four-post and certain scissor designs, use compressed air to release their mechanical safety locks. On those, air is not an accessory — the lift will not operate properly without it. Two-post lifts more commonly use mechanical or electrical lock release, but you should confirm per model.
Sizing a compressor sensibly
Judge a compressor by free air delivery — the volume it actually supplies, usually in litres per minute or cfm — and by the pressure it maintains. Motor power alone is not a reliable comparison between machines.
Then add up realistic simultaneous demand:
- Lift lock release (intermittent, small).
- Air tools — an impact wrench is a heavy intermittent draw.
- Tyre changer bead blasting, which is a sharp short demand.
- Inflation, blow guns, and anything else on the ring.
A receiver of adequate size smooths those peaks, so a well-sized tank often matters more than headline output. Plan for the busiest realistic moment rather than the average, and leave margin for equipment you may add later.
Also worth attention:
- Water management. Compressed air carries moisture. A filter, regulator and drain arrangement protects tools and equipment, and a dryer is worth it for tyre and paint work.
- Pipework sizing. Long runs of undersized pipe lose pressure. It is cheaper to size the ring correctly than to buy a bigger compressor to overcome it.
- Drop points. An outlet at each bay saves dragging hoses about all day.
- Noise and siting. Compressors are loud. Position matters for the people working nearby.
Planning the services alongside the equipment
The order that causes the fewest problems:
- Confirm the floor and the bay dimensions — see our guides to concrete requirements and workshop space.
- Select the lift, and obtain its documented power and air requirements.
- Have your electrician confirm the supply is achievable at the bay, and carry out the work.
- Confirm compressor capacity and pipework, adding drops where needed.
- Book the installation, with services in place and tested.
- Thorough examination before first use, then the lift goes into service.
None of this is complicated, but it does have a sequence. Most delayed installations we see come from services being treated as a detail to sort out later.
Frequently asked questions
Do vehicle lifts need three phase power?
Not necessarily. Many two-post and scissor lifts are available in single phase 230V. Three phase 400V is preferred where the building has it, particularly for larger equipment.
Does a vehicle lift need compressed air?
Some do. Four-post lifts and certain scissor designs use air to release their safety locks. Check the specification for the model you are buying.
What size compressor does a workshop need?
