What Lifting Capacity Does Your Garage Actually Need?
Lifting capacity is the specification most people fix on first and understand least. The number on the lift is a safe working load, and meeting it is only part of the question — where the weight sits, how it is distributed, and what you might be working on in five years all matter as much as the headline figure.
This guide explains what capacity actually means, how to work out what your garage needs, and why buying a lift that only just copes is a false economy.
What capacity means
The safe working load is the maximum weight the lift is designed and certified to raise, and it must be marked clearly on the equipment. It is not a target to aim at. It is a limit, established with engineering margin, that you stay comfortably below in normal work.
Two points are routinely misunderstood:
- It is the whole vehicle, not the kerb weight you remember. Add a full tank, a loaded van, roof bars, tools, a tow bar and a fitted conversion, and real weights run well above the brochure figure.
- Distribution matters as much as total. Two-post lifts have a specified front-to-rear load split. A vehicle with a heavy engine well forward, or a van loaded at the back, puts more through one pair of arms than a simple division would suggest.
What the vehicles actually weigh
Approximate gross figures, as a working guide:

The direction of travel is worth noting. Electric vehicles carry substantial battery mass low in the structure, and a mid-size EV can weigh as much as a large diesel SUV did a decade ago. Buying capacity for today's mix alone is how garages find themselves replacing a lift early.
Matching capacity to your work
As a general guide for two-post lifts:
- 4.0 tonnes — cars, small SUVs and light vans. Adequate for a car-focused independent, and increasingly close to the limit on heavier work.
- 4.5 to 5.0 tonnes — the sensible default for most general garages. Covers the full car and SUV range and light commercials up to 3.5t with genuine margin.
- 5.5 tonnes and above — regular van work, conversions, heavier 4x4s, or a garage that wants to keep its options open.
Four-post lifts are commonly specified higher again, and suit sustained commercial work and wheels-on jobs such as alignment.
Why margin is worth paying for
The price difference between a 4.0t and a 5.0t two-post lift is usually modest against the total cost of buying and installing one. What that margin buys you:
- You can take the work that arrives. Turning away a heavy vehicle because the lift will not take it costs more than the specification difference did.
- The lift is not working at its limit. Equipment habitually loaded near capacity wears faster and gives more to report at examination.
- It survives the fleet getting heavier. A lift is a ten-to-twenty-year purchase in a market where vehicle weights have risen steadily.
- Resale is easier. Higher-capacity equipment holds interest better.
Beyond the headline number
Capacity alone will not tell you whether a lift suits your work. Check these alongside it:
- Arm reach and configuration. Asymmetric arms suit cars and improve door opening; symmetric arms suit longer and heavier vehicles. Three-stage arms reach awkward pick-up points.
- Minimum pad height. Low sports cars need pads that drop low enough to get under the sill.
- Maximum pad height. High-clearance 4x4s and vans need adaptors and enough extension.
- Rise height. Full capacity is little use if you cannot raise the vehicle to a working height — see our guide to workshop space requirements.
- Wheelbase and track limits. Long vans can exceed a lift's usable footprint even when comfortably within its weight rating.
An EV point worth flagging: battery packs sit where lift pads want to go, and manufacturers specify particular lifting points. Confirm the pad and adaptor arrangement suits the EVs you expect to see.
Working within the rating in daily use
Specification is one half; use is the other.
- Know the weight of anything unusual before it goes up, rather than after.
- Respect the front-to-rear distribution limits, especially with loaded vans.
- Never leave a load on the lift that it was not designed to take, such as a body shell with the running gear removed and the balance changed.
- Use the correct adaptors rather than improvising height with packing.
- Make sure the safe working load marking stays legible — it is a requirement, and it gets painted over surprisingly often.

What capacity vehicle lift do I need for a general garage?
For most UK independents, 4.5 to 5.0 tonnes on a two-post lift covers cars, SUVs and light commercials up to 3.5t with sensible margin.
Can I lift a 3.5 tonne van on a 4 tonne lift?
On paper. In practice it leaves very little margin once the van is loaded, and it takes no account of front-to-rear distribution. For regular van work, specify higher.
Do electric vehicles need a higher capacity lift?
Often, yes. EVs are heavier than equivalent combustion models, and they also require specific lifting points to avoid the battery pack — so check pads and adaptors as well as the rating.
What happens if I overload a lift?
Overload protection should prevent the lift raising, but repeatedly loading to or beyond the limit accelerates wear and will show up at thorough examination. It is not something to work around.
Does capacity include the weight of a load in the vehicle?
Yes. The rating applies to everything the arms carry — vehicle, fuel, tools, fitted equipment and payload.
