Lifting Vans and Light Commercials: What Changes

Taking on van work is one of the more reliable ways for a garage to grow. Fleet and sole-trader customers book regularly, plan their servicing, and value a workshop that can turn work round quickly.

The equipment question is more involved than simply buying a bigger lift. Vans differ from cars in weight, in dimensions, in how they are constructed and in where they can safely be picked up. This guide covers what actually changes.

Weight: the obvious change, and the one people get wrong

Light commercial vehicles run up to 3,500kg gross vehicle weight, which is the boundary most garages work to. The mistake is treating that as the number to specify against.

What you should account for:

  • Gross, not kerb. A van arriving loaded with a trade customer's stock is nearer its GVW than its unladen figure.
  • Conversions. Welfare units, refrigerated bodies, tipper conversions and racked-out workshop vans all add substantial weight.
  • Distribution. A van's load sits behind the rear axle line as often as not, which shifts weight onto one pair of arms.
  • Electric vans. Battery mass has pushed some models close to their own weight limits, and they are heavier than the diesel equivalents they replace.

For regular van work, a two-post lift at 5.0 tonnes or above gives sensible margin. Specifying at 4.0t because "vans are 3.5t" leaves nothing in hand. Our guide to lifting capacity covers the reasoning in full.

Dimensions matter as much as weight

A van can be comfortably within a lift's weight rating and still be the wrong shape for it.

  • Wheelbase. Long-wheelbase vans can exceed the usable spread of a lift's arms. Check the lift's maximum wheelbase, not just its capacity.
  • Height. High-roof vans are commonly 2,500mm and above before you lift them at all. On a clearfloor two-post, the overhead crossbar becomes the limit — one of the strongest arguments for a baseplate lift, as covered in our comparison of the two configurations.
  • Length and bay depth. A long van needs room to get in, get square and open its rear doors.
  • Door aperture. Your shutter has to admit the vehicle before anything else matters.
  • Width and mirrors. Van mirrors stand proud, and a bay that suits cars can be tight.

Lifting points are different

This is the part most often underestimated. Many vans use a ladder chassis or reinforced sill sections with designated lifting points, and these are not where you would pick up a car.

  • Consult the manufacturer's information for each model rather than assuming. Getting this wrong damages the vehicle and is unsafe.
  • Adaptors and extensions are usually required to reach chassis rails that sit higher than a car sill.
  • Three-stage arms earn their place, reaching pick-up points that fixed arms cannot.
  • Pad height range needs checking at both ends — high enough for chassis rails, low enough for the cars you also work on.

Which lift type suits van work

Two-post, baseplate Often the best fit. No overhead restriction for high-roof vans, and wheels-free access. Needs the right arms and adaptors.
Two-post, clearfloor Workable if your building is tall enough that the crossbar is not a limit. Clear floor is a real advantage on longer vehicles.
Four-post Very stable, easy drive-on for long wheelbases, and suited to alignment and inspection work. Wheels stay loaded, so a jacking beam is needed for wheels-off jobs.
Scissor Good where height is limited. Check platform length and capacity against the vans you see.

The rest of the workshop

Van work has knock-on effects beyond the lift:

  • Wheels and tyres. Van wheels are heavier with stiffer sidewalls. Confirm your tyre changer's clamping range and bead breaker cope — see our tyre changer guide.

A note on going beyond 3.5 tonnes

Above 3,500kg you are into a different category of vehicle and a different category of equipment — heavier lifts, mobile column systems, and additional considerations around testing and inspection. It is a deliberate step rather than an extension of light commercial work, and worth planning as such.

What size lift do I need for vans?

Can I lift a high-roof van on a clearfloor two-post lift?

Only up to the point the roof reaches the overhead shutoff bar. For regular high-roof work, a baseplate lift removes the restriction.
