Baseplate vs Clearfloor Two-Post Lifts: Which Suits Your Workshop?

Two-post lifts come in two configurations, and the difference between them is a single design decision: where the hydraulic hoses and equalisation cables run. Along the floor, or over the top.

That one choice changes the height of building you need, how clear your bay is to work in, and how the lift behaves day to day. Neither arrangement is better in the abstract. The right answer depends on your building and the work you do in it.

Baseplate lifts

A baseplate lift, sometimes called a floorplate lift, routes its services through a shallow steel bar spanning the floor between the columns. The vehicle drives over the bar to enter the bay.

Advantages

  • Much lower height requirement — typically from around 2,800mm, because nothing sits above the columns. This is the main reason to choose one.
  • Nothing overhead — no crossbar to catch a tall vehicle, and no restriction on how high a van or SUV can be raised beyond the lift's own limit.
  • Often simpler to install in a building with awkward roof structure or services.

Disadvantages

  • The floor is not clear. The bar is a trip point, an obstruction for trolley jacks and creepers, and a place dirt collects.
  • It gets driven over constantly, so the cover and the components beneath see wear.
  • Sweeping and washing down the bay is more awkward.

Clearfloor lifts

A clearfloor lift, also called an overhead or two-post gantry lift, carries its hoses and cables through a crossbar joining the tops of the columns. The floor between the columns is completely unobstructed.

Advantages

  • Completely clear floor — nothing to trip over, drive over or work around. This matters more than it sounds on a bay used all day.
  • Easier for jacks, stands, creepers and drain trays.
  • Cleaner to maintain, with no floor bar collecting debris.
  • Services are up out of the way of damage and contamination.

Disadvantages

  • Considerably more height needed — typically from around 3,500mm.
  • The crossbar limits vehicle height. A shutoff bar cuts the lift when a vehicle contacts it, which protects the vehicle but caps how high you can take tall ones.

Choosing between them

In practice the decision usually makes itself, in this order:

  1. Measure your clear height first. If you have under about 3,500mm to the lowest obstruction, baseplate is likely your answer and the rest of the discussion is academic. Our guide to workshop space requirements covers how to measure this properly.
  2. Consider the vehicles. Regular work on high-roof vans favours baseplate, because there is no crossbar to run into.
  3. Consider the working pattern. A bay in constant use, with jacks and stands moving in and out all day, benefits from a clear floor more than an occasional-use bay does.
  4. Then look at whether the building can change. If a single light fitting or duct is what puts you under 3,500mm, moving it may be cheaper than accepting a compromise.

Where a building has the height, most general workshops prefer clearfloor. The clear bay is a small daily advantage that accumulates over years. Where height is tight, baseplate lifts are not a consolation prize — they are a well-proven arrangement that simply puts the services somewhere else.

What does not change between them

Both configurations place the same demands on your floor. The load still goes into anchor bolts at the base of each column, so the concrete specification is identical: at least 180mm of sound, cured C20/25 concrete beneath each baseplate.

Can I lift a high-roof van on a clearfloor lift?

Up to the point the roof reaches the shutoff bar. If tall vans are routine work, a baseplate lift removes the restriction entirely.

Is one more reliable than the other?

No. Both are mature designs. Baseplate components live in a harsher position at floor level; clearfloor components are protected but less accessible. Servicing keeps either in good order.
