How to Get the Most Out of Your Hydraulic Vehicle Lift

A hydraulic vehicle lift works under enormous pressure every day of its life, and it is remarkably tolerant of being ignored — right up until it is not. The difference between a lift that gives fifteen years of service and one that starts generating findings after five is almost entirely maintenance.

What follows is the routine that keeps a lift working properly, and where the line sits between what your team does and what needs a qualified engineer.

Maintenance and examination are not the same thing

Worth settling first, because conflating the two is the most common compliance failure in UK workshops.

  • Maintenance keeps the lift working. It follows the manufacturer's schedule, it is driven by PUWER, and it involves adjustment, lubrication and replacing worn parts.
  • Thorough examination assesses condition and reports defects. It is driven by LOLER, carried out by an independent competent person, and it involves no repair work at all.

Start with the operators

No amount of servicing compensates for misuse. The most common causes of premature wear are all operational:

  • Picking the vehicle up at the wrong points, which damages both vehicle and arms.
  • Loading unevenly, so one pair of arms carries more than its share.
  • Raising without checking the arm restraints have engaged.
  • Not lowering onto the mechanical locks before working underneath.
  • Running close to or beyond the safe working load.

Anyone operating a lift should know its capacity, its correct pick-up points and how its locks work. On electric vehicles in particular, lifting points are specified by the manufacturer and getting them wrong risks the battery pack.

Daily checks

These take a couple of minutes at the start of a shift and catch most problems early:

  • Look underneath for fresh hydraulic fluid on the floor.
  • Check the arm restraints engage and hold.
  • Listen through one full cycle — new noises are information.
  • Confirm the mechanical locks engage audibly and release cleanly.
  • Check the controls and emergency stop respond.
  • Clear the bay of tools, cables and debris around the columns.

Weekly and monthly

Weekly

  • Inspect arm pads for wear, splitting or contamination — worn pads slip.
  • Check hoses and fittings for weeping, chafing or kinks.
  • Look over cables or chains for fraying, corrosion or slack.
  • Wipe down columns and clear debris from carriage channels.

Monthly

  • Check hydraulic fluid level with the lift fully lowered, and top up only with the specified fluid.
  • Lubricate carriage slides, arm pivots and lock mechanisms per the manual.
  • Inspect anchor bolts for movement, and the concrete around them for cracking.
  • Check that carriages rise and fall level with each other.
  • Confirm the safe working load marking is still legible.

The wear points that matter most

Component What to watch for
Hydraulic seals and rams Weeping that returns after a seal kit usually means a scored ram.
Equalisation cables or chains Stretch, fraying, corrosion. Replace as matched sets, never singly.
Mechanical locks Hesitant or partial engagement. These are the last line of defence.
Slide pads Wear causes carriage rock and accelerates column wear.
Arm restraints Worn teeth let arms move under load.
Anchor bolts Repeated loosening usually points at the floor rather than the bolt.
Hydraulic fluid Contamination and moisture damage the pump. Change to schedule.

Stop and call an engineer

Some things are not a matter for the workshop:

  • Any fault with the locks or arm restraints.
  • Cables or chains showing broken strands, corrosion or uneven tension.
  • Hydraulic leaks beyond a light weep, or any loss of holding pressure.
  • Anchors that will not hold torque, or cracking in the concrete around them.
  • Uneven carriage movement.
  • Any structural corrosion or distortion.

Keeping the records

Maintenance records are a PUWER requirement and they are also the most useful diagnostic tool you have — patterns only become visible when they are written down. Keep for each lift:

  1. Manufacturer's documentation and declaration of conformity.
  2. Installation certificate.
  3. Every report of thorough examination.
  4. Service and maintenance records, including the routine checks above.
  5. Records of any repair and the fault that prompted it.

The floor is part of the maintenance

Anchors are the interface between the lift and the building, and problems there are frequently misdiagnosed as bolt problems. Keep the area around each column clean and dry; standing water and spilled fluids accelerate corrosion exactly where it matters most.

How often should a vehicle lift be serviced?

To the manufacturer's schedule, which typically means daily and weekly user checks by your team plus a periodic service by a qualified engineer. That is separate from six-monthly thorough examination under LOLER.

Is a service the same as a LOLER inspection?

No. Servicing keeps the lift working and follows PUWER. Thorough examination assesses condition, is carried out by an independent competent person, and involves no repair work.

What hydraulic fluid should I use?

Only the grade specified by the manufacturer, and check the level with the lift fully lowered. The wrong fluid, or contaminated fluid, damages seals and pumps.

How long should a hydraulic lift last?

Fifteen to twenty years or more with proper maintenance. Lifespan depends far more on how it is used and maintained, and on floor condition, than on age.

Why do my anchor bolts keep coming loose?

Usually the concrete rather than the bolts — a slab that is too thin, too weak or degraded around the fixings. Retorquing treats the symptom, so have the floor assessed.
