ADAS Calibration: What Independent Garages Need to Know
Almost every car built in the last few years carries cameras, radar or both, feeding lane assist, automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. Those sensors are aimed with considerable precision, and a number of ordinary garage jobs disturb that aim.
Which means calibration is no longer a bodyshop concern. It is becoming a routine part of general servicing, and a garage that cannot do it increasingly has to send work elsewhere.
What ADAS calibration actually is
Advanced driver assistance systems rely on sensors that know exactly where they are pointing relative to the vehicle. A forward camera behind the windscreen, radar behind the grille, corner radars in the bumpers, and cameras in the mirrors and tailgate all reference the vehicle's centreline and thrust line.
Calibration is the procedure that re-establishes that reference. Without it, a sensor can be physically secure and still be reading the road several degrees off — which is worse than an obviously broken sensor, because nothing warns the driver.
The jobs that require it
This is the part most garages underestimate. Calibration is commonly required after:
- Windscreen replacement — the forward camera is mounted to the glass.
- Wheel alignment — changing the thrust line changes what "straight ahead" means to the sensors.
- Suspension work that alters ride height, including spring or damper replacement.
- Bumper removal or replacement, which disturbs radar and corner sensors.
- Any front-end accident repair, however minor it looks.
- Camera or radar replacement, obviously, but also removal and refitting.

Static and dynamic calibration
Static calibration is carried out in the workshop with the vehicle stationary. Manufacturer-specified targets are positioned at exact distances, heights and angles in front of the vehicle, and the system is calibrated against them using a diagnostic tool.
Dynamic calibration is carried out by driving the vehicle at a specified speed on suitable roads while a scan tool runs the procedure. It needs clear lane markings, reasonable weather and traffic conditions that allow a steady speed to be held.
Which applies is decided by the manufacturer, not by you. Some models are static only, some dynamic only, and a good number require a static calibration followed by a dynamic drive to confirm it. Following the manufacturer's procedure for that specific vehicle is the whole discipline.
What a calibration bay needs
Static calibration is demanding of space and conditions, and this is where most garages find the real constraint:
- Floor space. Targets sit several metres in front of the vehicle, and requirements vary by manufacturer — commonly in the region of 8 to 12 metres of total bay length once the vehicle and working space are included. Check against the makes you intend to cover.
- A genuinely level floor. Calibration references the vehicle's geometry, and a sloping or uneven floor introduces error into everything measured on it.
- Clear space around the vehicle, on both sides and behind.
- Controlled lighting. Consistent, even light with no strong sunlight, reflections or shadows across the targets.
- Plain surroundings. Reflective surfaces and visual clutter behind the targets can interfere with camera-based procedures.
- A stable power supply and a battery support unit, since procedures are long and voltage drop causes failures.
Dedicating a bay to this has a cost. A bay that must be cleared and set up for each calibration has a different cost, paid in time on every job.
Equipment and training
You need a target system with the frames and panels for the makes you cover, a diagnostic platform with the calibration procedures and current vehicle data, precise measuring equipment for positioning, and a battery support unit.
Training matters more here than with most equipment. The procedures are unforgiving of approximation, and the failure mode is invisible — a vehicle that leaves calibrated to the wrong reference looks and drives entirely normally. The Independent Garage Association publishes guidance and training routes for members, and manufacturer procedures should be your working reference throughout.
Is it worth it for an independent?
The case for is that the work already exists in your bays. If you fit windscreens, do alignment, or touch suspension and front-end components, you are either calibrating, subcontracting, or handing the job away. It also protects the services you already sell, because alignment without calibration is increasingly an incomplete job.
The case against is that it is a genuine investment in space, equipment and training, and it makes little sense if you cannot dedicate the floor area or commit someone to learning it properly.
A sensible middle route for many garages is to establish a relationship with a calibration specialist first, understand the volume you are sending out, and bring it in-house when that volume justifies the bay.
Recording the work
Document what you did: the procedure followed, the pre- and post-calibration readings, and the report from the diagnostic tool. On a safety system, the record of a correctly completed procedure matters — keep it with the job as a matter of routine.
